What Does The Gospel – The Story of Jesus Mean For Me?
Even now, this “ancient story” is actively unfolding! Though we can’t see him, this same Jesus is still alive and in charge today! He invites people everywhere to experience his healing power; to learn from his divine wisdom for life; to receive the offer of God’s forgiveness; and to experience a new life, filled with and guided by his Holy Spirit. The Bible calls this being “saved”: “rescued” from the tragic impact of our rebellion, recreated, and re-purposed for God’s original plan: a life devoted to loving Him and loving people.
All this means that no matter where you are coming from, you can move forward into a far better future. Jesus lived, died, and rose again so that you could become, through him, the person God created you to be from the very beginning: a reflection in the world of a good and loving God!
How Can I Become A Follower of Jesus?
It’s not enough to just know about Jesus. If you want to receive the gift of his love and forgiveness, you have an important choice to make. You must accept his offer! Will you allow him to be Saviour and Lord of your life?
Paul, one of Jesus’ early followers, wrote this:
“If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 10:9
Here is a simple way to take this step of faith and receive Jesus as Saviour and Lord of your life. The first three steps are prayers – speaking to God. The last two are actions we’d love to help you take.
1. Be Honest with God
“God, I’m sorry for the things I’ve done wrong. I have failed to love you and others like I should. No matter how hard I try, I could never love in the way you require; no payment of my own can make up for my failings. I’m sorry.”
2. Believe His Promise to Save You
“God, I believe that what Jesus has done can and must change me. He has died the death that I deserved to die. He has freed me from the guilt and shame of my sin. Because Jesus’ perfect obedience has been credited to me, you see me as a beloved child and friend, not as a stranger or enemy. I trust Jesus Christ to save me from all that is destroying me and distracting me from loving you and others as I should. Thank you.”
3. Bow Your Will to His
“Jesus, you are the living Lord. I hand over control of my life to you. Fill me with the Holy Spirit as you have promised to do. With the power that you have, heal my wounds, teach me how to live, rescue me from addictive habits, and show me how to share your love with others every day. I’m yours.”
We all face obstacles between where we are and where we want to be. Discovery Community Church would love to meet you, even in the deepest part of the river, to help you by walking with you as we introduce you to Jesus Christ and help you with the power of God to make life’s difficult bold crossings.
If your heart has embraced these three prayers as your own, or you have more questions, or you have prayed these three prayers – “I’m sorry. Thank you. I’m yours.” – we’d love to know. Please email us and let us know about the decision you made today.
